AllGasAndGaiters audio oldtimeradio radioprograms BBC radio comedy series, broadcast from 1971-72. This is the radio version of the BBC television series "All Gas and Gaiters". The television scripts have been adapted for radio by Pauline Devaney and Edwin Apps, the husband-and-wife team who created and wrote the television show. This is a situation comedy depicting the goings-on at a fictional English Cathedral called St Ogg's. The main characters are the Bishop and his chaplain. The latter, who is notionally the star of the show, is the Bishop's secretary; but the Bishop treats him as a general dogsbody. The other regular characters are the Archdeacon (who is also the Bishop's oldest friend), and the Dean (the Bishop's principal antagonist). The Bishop's chaplain, Mervyn Noote, is played by Derek Nimmo (series 1) and Jonathan Cecil (series 2). Derek Nimmo had starred in the television series, and he reprised his role in the first series on radio. He was unavailable for the second radio series, since at the time of recording he was touring Australia in a play, so the part of Noote was taken instead by Jonathan Cecil. The rest of the television cast were retained for the radio recordings. Thus William Mervyn plays the Bishop of St Ogg's, Robertson Hare plays the Archdeacon, and John Barron plays the Dean. The Dean's wife, Mrs Pugh-Critchley, who appears as a semi-regular, is played by Joan Sanderson. The files listed in the column VBR MP3 are not in fact variable bit rate files.
